A Primer on planning a Smart Home/ Office with MEP Engineering Services

MEP Engineering Services

With rapid advancement in technology related to Design and Construction Engineering space we have seen this space expand at a very high rate. This has also led to lower project risk, reduced costs and improve operational efficiency. The engineering trends suggest that the industry-wide technology investment has grown to $10 billion in less than a year, and has the capacity to grow multi-fold in the upcoming years; and MEP engineering designs and services is a big contributor towards this growth.

To construct a building is a different thing, but to build a working infrastructure takes a lot of elements to come along together. Building services are the set of elements that are required to add life to a home or an office premise; which are also known as MEP engineering designs and services. MEP essentially stands for Mechanical, Engineering and Plumbing. MEP designs are important for planning, decision making, accurate documentation, performance- and cost-estimation, construction, and operating/maintaining the resulting facilities. Here are a few pointers to give you an overview of MEP (mechanical, engineering and plumbing):

1.Mechanical: Mechanical is the superset of HVAC services (Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning). These services are a major concern for all the buildings, either home or big server rooms, as it regulates the internal environmental factors for human comfort and the operations of the machines. Apart from heating, ventilation and air condition, water cooling/heating, humidity control, and air filtration are also incorporated in mechanical services. For example, Google’s or Facebook’s data centres make extensive use of heat exchangers to cool down their servers for proper operation of machines.

2.Engineering: The two major components of engineering services under the MEP umbrella are Alternating Current and Information Technology. The Alternating Current component looks after the electrical wiring, distribution of main power and the back-up control of electricity; that keeps the every-day appliances in a building running.

With the advent of telecommunication and advancement in computer networking systems, and it becoming an integral part of our day-to-day’s work and activities; the incorporation of computer networking, telephones, television, security systems, audio distribution, and healthcare systems’ wiring are required to be planned and managed with the main power electrical wiring.

3.Plumbing: The plumbing aspect of MEP covers the planning, installation, and management of the water pipes, air distribution and control, sewerage, storm water, natural gas, and sometimes rainwater collection and storage, heated water and many more through the walls, subfloor, and the ceiling cavities.

Apart from the before mentioned tasks, plumbing systems also service the air distribution and control and therefore contribute to the mechanical part of MEP. Plumbing for HVAC systems involves the transfer of coolant, pressurised air, water, and occasionally other substances.

The electrical and plumbing are two facets that work together, and the mechanical services bring together the best of both of them. Electricians and plumbers usually have a little to do with each other, except keeping out of each other’s way, but the integration of the two services with the mechanical designs and services works wonder in building a smart functional premise.

Conclusion:The boom in technology and the need for sophisticated ambience in residential and industrial premises has led to the growth of MEP designs and services. MEP plays an important role since the inception of planning until the execution, in constructing a building. The most important implementation of MEP applications is in Smart Homes and Smart Cities. Every organization is embracing the new technology; and it looks like the next few decades will be quite exciting for construction companies that understand how to best adopt and strategically incorporate these technology trends.
